GUIDING PRINCIPLES
  • Dignity and respect: for all persons, regardless of their social and economic standing, and regardless of their intellectual or cognitive capability, their culture, language or identity.
  • Change: every human being is capable of changing their circumstances and their outlook and the Counselling Department is committed to providing the safe and supportive environment conducive to that change.
  • Confidentiality: all individuals could expect that they would be afforded the highest levels of ethics and confidentiality as it relates to their personal information.
  • Education: the Department values the use of education, training and awareness building to prevent and intervene in the problems associated with mental health issues.
SERVICES OFFERED
  • Treatment – intervention for various presentations of issues affecting mental wellness;
  • Treatment – specialized intervention for specific diagnoses (eg. Substance use disorders in adolescents and adults)
  • Training and workshop development and Psycho-educational presentations
  • Family intervention
  • Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) response to crisis and trauma
  • Grief counselling
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) response to various governmental and non-governmental institutions
  • Prevention and Intervention Family Systems Model (Family Matters)
  • Targeted work with at risk families to lower their risk factors and increase their family resilience and strength
ANNUAL ACTIVITIES/OBSERVANCES

World Mental Health day – celebrated each year on October 10th with an identified theme each year. The National Counselling Centre works in collaboration with Mental Health Association to celebrate a week of activities in the week surrounding world mental health day.

Training of Helping Professionals – held each February in conjunction with global volunteer partners. Each February, professionals in a wide variety of social work and mental health related fields spend 2-3 days with Helping professionals in the federation, providing them with skills and knowledge to enhance the delivery of their work.
